Shanghai Proton & Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC)
上海市质子重离子医院
Medical Excellence
The Shanghai Proton & Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC) is China's first and most experienced particle therapy facility and one of the busiest in the world. Since opening in 2015, SPHIC has treated over 5,000 cancer patients using both proton and carbon-ion beam therapy — a form of radiation therapy that delivers highly targeted radiation with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. SPHIC is equipped with a synchrotron-based particle therapy system featuring 4 treatment rooms (3 proton, 1 carbon-ion with rotating gantry) and pencil beam scanning technology for sub-millimeter precision. Published outcomes show 2-year local control rates exceeding 90% for skull base tumors and 85% for hepatocellular carcinoma. The center is located within the Shanghai Pudong International Medical Zone (SIMZ), benefiting from the Shanghai Free Trade Zone's accelerated medical device and drug access policies. A dedicated international department provides full English-language support, including remote pre-assessment, treatment planning, and follow-up coordination.
